The Music Industry – The Influence of Music on Society

Music is the art of composing sounds in varying time intervals through the elements of harmony, melody, rhythm and timbre. It is also one of the oldest universal cultural elements of all human cultures. Generally accepted definitions of music generally include basic elements like rhythm, pitch, dynamics, and the emotional sonic properties of timbre and tone. While music is created using many different instruments such as piano, guitar, violin, cello, drums, voice, or even the computer, it can be synthesized by a computer through recorded tones. Although some forms of modern music are based on traditional methods and instruments, most music today has been developed through the fusion of many different styles. One of the most common uses for music is in the creation of video games.

During the early years of the twentieth century, several types of music developed in Europe and were commonly referred to as folk music. Examples of early folk music include French folk music, English folk music, German folk music, Japanese Zen music, Russian folk music, Hungarian folk music, Brazilian bumbler music, and Balinese traditional music. The twentieth century gave birth to new and more popular music styles including Jazz, Post-punk, and New Age music. In North America, new popular music genres include skateboarding music, hip hop, house music, rap music, heavy metal, gothic music, techno, punk, folk, and classical music.

Today, classical music is often considered a niche art form. Many people feel that classical concert music is too boring. However, many classical composers are receiving plenty of exposure in the twenty first century thanks to the concerts of contemporary artist like Yo-Yo Ma. Some classical compositions have been adapted into popular songs by well known musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma, composer Arthur Sylvester Gross, conductor and concert musician Yo-Yo Maurer, and composer Moslem Al-Rajbala.

In addition to being an art form, music has also served as a tool for educating people. Many classical composers wrote notes and music scores to be used for instruction in schools and colleges. For example, composer Philip Glass wrote music scores for the Broadway musical ” bearings” for the younger children in an effort to introduce music to them.

In order to compose symphonies, a composer should have expert level knowledge on music theory, composition, arranging, voice, sight reading, pedagogy, concert literature, musical instruments, etc. The goal of a professional concert musician is to present a professional symphonic or operatic presentation that has engaging and impressive music structure. Professional symphonic and operatic concert music requires skilled musicianship, technical expertise, a vast repertoire of musical instruments, excellent technique, intuitive listening skills, charisma, credibility and professionalism.

As mentioned earlier, many famous composers like Yo-Yo Ma have ventured into the concert music arena. They have become stars not only in their own right but also because of their contributions to the music industry. Today, you can find many contemporary composers who have created a niche for themselves in the music industry. It is this variety of talented composers that has made the contemporary music industry what it is today.
