Bon Jovi is an amazing band, and even at the age of 62 they continue to sell out arenas across the country. Their music spans decades and they’re able to keep their sound evolving while never abandoning their blue collar roots that got them started in the first place. From their huge hit “Slippery When Wet” to the latest album they never fail to deliver a great show. They’ve even branched out and dabbled in country and dance and they always come back to the rock that made them famous.
The crowd was raucous and energetic and seemed to love every minute of the two hour plus show. The lights were bright and the stage set was massive, complete with a network of video screens that lit up with stars and stripes and images of soldiers and sailors serving our country. Jon wore his signature black leather jacket accented with the stars and stripes. He flashed his Hollywood smile and was an all-around good sport. He didn’t wander into the audience like he used to and he didn’t drop confetti or balloons, but he made sure that everyone had a great time for a couple of hours.
While it’s true that he doesn’t have the vocal range he once had, he still is an expert showman and a great entertainer. He has a young soul and knows how to connect with the crowd. He kept the audience engaged and had everyone singing along to hits such as “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Always.”
Phil X did a terrific job filling in for Richie Sambora and added heft to the anthems. The rhythm section of drummer Tico Torres and bassist Hugh McDonald was solid as well.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 40 years since the group exploded onto the scene with their smash hit “Runaway.” But they’re still selling out arenas at this late date and their fan base continues to grow. They’re a hard-rocking, good-time group and this concert was proof that they still have it.
