Whether you love them or hate them, it’s hard to deny that Bon Jovi is one of the most iconic bands of our generation. Their power ballads are on every classic rock playlist, and their songs are staples of karaoke bars around the world! With a huge discography, and countless concert dates under their belt, they are true rock ‘n’ roll legends. So, it’s no wonder that Hulu’s latest documentary, Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story has people of all ages talking.
Taking itself very seriously, the four-part series follows Bon Jovi from their humble beginnings in 1980s New Jersey to their massive international fame, chart-topping records and sold out shows. The series follows the band’s ups and downs with interviews from longtime fans, as well as current members of the group including keyboardist David Bryan, drummer Tico Torres, bassist Hugh McDonald and guitarist Phil X. The band also discusses their past and present struggles with substance abuse and their fight to preserve their legacy as one of the biggest American rock bands of the 1990s.
Jon Bon Jovi, in that grey area between “still got it” and “yer nan’s had her hair done”, is the star of the show, and it seems like he still has it, even though his voice isn’t what it used to be. He’s outwardly the smooth CEO of a massive enterprise, but all those years on the road and that reckless key change in Livin’ on a Prayer have taken their toll. Vitamins, vocal exercises and humidifiers just don’t seem to be cutting it anymore.
