John Francis Bongiovi Jr, known professionally as Jon Bon Jovi, is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist and actor. He is the frontman of the band Bon Jovi, with whom he has sold more than 120 million albums worldwide. He is a philanthropist and founder of the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, which supports “innovative community efforts to break the cycle of poverty, hunger and homelessness.” He is also the co-founder and majority owner of the Arena Football League team the Philadelphia Soul.
Bon Jovi has also enjoyed considerable success as a solo artist, releasing the multi-platinum album Keep The Faith in 1994 and the Grammy-nominated Crush two years later. He reformed the band for 1997’s Destination Anywhere, and they released another top-10 album in 2002 with Bounce. Following the departure of guitarist Richie Sambora in 2013, they returned with 2015’s Burning Bridges, their first album to reach number one since Sambora’s exit.
In addition to recording and performing, Bon Jovi has tried his hand at acting — appearing in TV shows such as Sex and the City and Ally McBeal — and scoring film music, with his score for the World War II movie U-571 earning him an Oscar nomination. He has also penned several books, including the autobiographies Livin’ on a Prayer and It’s My Life.
Having been voted America’s Favorite Rock and Roll Band in 1996, Bon Jovi was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. The band has sold over 130 million albums globally and performed to more than 50 million fans in over 220 countries and territories.
A new Hulu docuseries promises to take viewers behind the scenes of Bon Jovi’s illustrious career. Titled Thank You, Goodnight, the series was filmed at various locations in New Jersey and features interviews with all members of the band, past and present, as well as friends and family members. The show will reportedly explore the group’s most public moments of friction, including their most recent departure.
Released in February 1984, this power ballad became a worldwide hit and is one of the most-played songs by the band in live performances. It’s also a favorite among fans on YouTube, with over 272 million views to date. Bon Jovi has also included it on some of their greatest hits compilations, such as The Best of Bon Jovi and Greatest Hits Volume 1.
