A rock icon, a family man and an entrepreneur, Jon Bon Jovi is a force to be reckoned with. He has earned the right to speak for millions of people with his anthems of love, hope, loss and survival. His voice may not be as thunderous as it once was, but his dedication to his craft and his fans remains untouched. With more than 130 million albums sold and an endless catalog of stadium anthems, the New Jersey native is a living legend.
Despite his health scare, Jon Bon Jovi’s enthusiasm for his band and its devoted following never wavered. The 62-year-old “snowbird,” as the New York Times calls him for his penchant for heading south to escape winter weather, kicked off the 2022 tour in Omaha on April 1.
There weren’t any smoke or pyro or balloon drops and the singer didn’t wander into the crowd like he did last time he was in Charlotte, but a massive network of lights and video screens proved rock-show worthy. He may not have the jumping jacks and jazz hands or surfer’s crouches that would normally accompany his song about a woman with cancer, but he made up for it with the energetic gyrations he does with the rest of the band, from the foot-stomping to the bounding to the rump-wriggling.
Bon Jovi has become known as one of the most successful live acts in music. The band, which started in Sayreville, NJ in 1983, has gone on to release 16 albums and sell more than 130 million records worldwide. They’ve also been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame and have won numerous awards, including a record of three consecutive Billboard Music Awards for Top Rock Artist.
With his famous heartthrob grin and trademark tousled hair, Jon Bon Jovi has lost some of the swagger that defined his early days but has kept intact his youthful ebullience. His voice no longer reaches those soaring heights but he still manages to belt out songs with power and he’s helped by a group of talented back-up vocalists, including David Bryan, Phil X, Everett Bradley and Alec John Such.
While the band hasn’t officially confirmed if they’ll continue touring in 2023, Jon Bon Jovi recently shared that he is hopeful they will. He’s also working on regaining his full range of vocal abilities, so it seems very likely that Bon Jovi will return to the road at some point.
