Hulu’s new series Thank You, Goodnight: The Story of Bon Jovi tries to balance Jon’s perspective as the face of the band with other members of the group — drummer Tico Torres, bassist Hugh McDonald and, most notably, former guitarist Richie Sambora (who died in 2022). But in all of this tinsel-flaked fawning over Jon, there’s surprisingly little attention given to the larger cultural context that gave rise to the band and their not-quite metal sound.
The result is a series that’s most likely to appeal to longtime fans who know this story by heart and are eager for more, or new converts who need a more comprehensive telling of the band’s history. But even for these groups, Gotham Chopra’s portrait is less compelling than it could have been.
